Kuzan, better known by his former epithet 'Aokiji (Blue Pheasant)', is a former Marine Admiral and the first one to be revealed. He was nominated by Sengoku for the position of Fleet Admiral. However, after losing the position to Sakazuki (Akainu), he resigned from the Marines.
He has currently affiliated himself with the Blackbeard Pirates for unknown reasons.

[ Childhood ]
Kuzan once lived as a vagrant during his childhood years. Nothing more is known about it as the details haven't been revealed yet.

Kuzan joined the Marines at age of 19. It is unknown his motives behind it, but he has never held the World Government who employs the Marines in high esteem.
(non-canon) He came under tutelage of Instructor Zephyr.

[ A Storm in the Edd War ; 22 Years Old ]
Kuzan participated at the Battle of Edd War along with several high-ranking officers. Not much detailed is revealed on his participation.

[ Ohara Incident ; 27 Years Old ]
Kuzan participated at the Ohara's Buster Call as one of the Vice Admirals overseeing the completion of the mission.
Once the Marines spotted the defected Vice Admiral Jaguar D. Saul, Kuzan decided to take matter into his own hands, landing at Ohara and fought against his best friend who was protecting a survivor of Ohara, Nico Robin.
In the midst of the heated battle, the ship containing survivors that were not linked to the scholars of Ohara was sunk by Vice Admiral Sakazuki. Upon witnessing the bombardment, Kuzan begrudgingly cursed his fellow Vice Admiral on his senseless and brutal actions.
Thinking that sinking the ship was the original mission from the Government, Saul attacks Kuzan in anger, questioning Kuzan about the Justice. The young Vice Admiral tried to explain the situation to no avail.
He was forced to kill his best friend under command, freezing him with Ice Time. However, he let Nico Robin escaped per Saul's last wish, a decision he came to doubt for years since then.
"And remember this: I am not your ally... If you do anything, I'm the 'enemy' that will be the first to catch you."

[ Promotion into Admiral ; > 27 Years Old ]
Due to all his accomplishments and prowess, Kuzan was promoted into an Admiral, becoming one of the three strongest powerhouses of the Marines.
He gains the epithet 'Aokiji (Blue Pheasant)'.

[ Long Ring Long Land ; 47 Years Old ]
Kuzan was taking a 'stroll' in the Grand Line, crossing the sea with his bike, Ao Chari.
He first met the Straw Hat pirates at an Long Ring Long Land island, where Robin introduced him as a Marine Admiral. Seeing Robin panicked by the Admiral's presence made the pirates wary and readied themselves to fight against Kuzan. The Admiral explained his presence there was just for a mere stroll.
Kuzan who happened to overheard Tonjit's conversation with the Straw Hat pirates, he decided to use his powers to freeze the sea, allowing the poor old man and his horse to cross the sea and went to the next island.
Seeing the action of the pirates, Kuzan decided he should not let them escaped and had them killed on the spot for good.
The truth of his arrival at the island was because he had been tracking the progress of Nico Robin, especially since the fall of Crocodile, the Shichibukai Robin was serving for. He was worried by how such a small pirate group was able to make such a huge progress in a short amount of time, gathering strong and able members to the point they were even able to defeat a Warlord and saved Alabasta.
The Straw Hat fought against Kuzan, but due to the huge power gap between them, Kuzan soundly defeated them all, freezing Robin and Luffy completely. Since they defeated Crocodile and saved Alabasta, Kuzan chose to let them live.

[ Post-Enies Lobby ; 47 Years Old ]
After the incident of Enies Lobby, Kuzan visited Robin as the Straw Hat and the people of Water 7 were having a celebration over their victory.
The Admiral asked whether Robin had found a 'place' to stay, which Robin answered she had in the Straw Hat pirates.
Leaving the survivor of Ohara alone, Kuzan told Robin that he wanted Robin to show both Saul and him the answers to their decisions of saving her, and Ohara had not been forgotten yet.

[ Post-Paramount War ; 49 Years Old ]
After the end of the Paramount War, Kuzan had a duel with his Admiral comrade Sakazuki for the position of Fleet Admiral. In the duel however, he lost and thus, Sakazuki became the new Fleet Admiral. Disgusted with the idea of serving under him, Kuzan left the Marine.
It was later known that he had affiliated himself with the Underworld and now, with the Blackbeard Pirates for an unknown reason.
"The World Government isn't everything. Try viewing things from a different perspective."
Kuzan is a very laid back man, showing no shock or surprise from almost anything. His lack of interest and "Lazy Justice" (だらけきった正義, Darakekitta Seigi as he describes his motto himself) often leads others to believe he can't possibly be a Marine of such a high ranking, which leads them to underestimate him, making him all the more dangerous (it is unknown whether this is a facade or if he's genuinely lazy). However, if he deems a situation worthy, he will take action.
His motto used to be "Burning/Fired Up Justice" (燃え上がる正義 Moeagaru Seigi) before he changed it to "Lazy Justice".
In accordance with the age difference between him and the other pre-time skip Admirals, Kuzan doesn't refer to himself with "washi" (儂), the "I" typical for older men but the "I" more frequently used by younger men and teens, the rather rough "ore" (俺). Altogether, his manner of speaking is far more lax than Borsalino’s (who’s exceedingly polite), containing a lot of ellipses and contractions, yet lacking the rude connotation of Sakazuki's speech, and being far more calm. He tends to begin addressing people with "excuse me"/"I hate to interrupt, but…" (ちょっとごめんな chotto gomen na).
Aokiji is a compassionate man. Despite being a Marine, this compassion can even extend to pirates as long as their actions are mostly benevolent. This was shown when he chose not to arrest or kill Luffy because the young pirate had defeated Crocodile, thus saving Alabasta from the latter's malevolence. Because of this compassion, he follows Moral Justice.
Kuzan has a sense of honor, as he keeps his word to not attack the Straw Hat Pirates after accepting a one-on-one battle with Luffy. He is disgusted by Sakazuki's brutal actions in dealing with situations (such as the Ohara Incident).
While he follows Moral Justice, he does understand the position his ranking puts him in, as he does not hesitate to do what is necessary for the needs of the Marines, as shown when he freezes Jaguar D. Saul to death during the Ohara incident, and attacked Luffy and Whitebeard during the Marineford War.
As a Marine, Kuzan was a faithful follower of the World Government. He always tried to follow orders but sometimes found his own ideals in opposition to his orders. Even as he followed his orders, he would sometimes exhibit a sense of mercy and honor other World Government officials did not. Like many characters in One Piece (for example, Jaguar D. Saul and Smoker), after witnessing the senseless murder of many innocent people, Kuzan has come to realize the depths to which the World Government will sink to accomplish their goals.
Aokiji, during the Whitebeard War at Marineford, grudgingly shredded his usual lax and friendly nature, for a more ruthless and aggressive personality, repeatedly targeting Whitebeard himself, managing to severely injure "Diamond" Jozu and generally hampering any attempts at rescue or escape for the invading pirate fleets.
His relaxed demeanor while performing the more macabre of his duties is similar to that of Borsalino, making him one of the more complicated characters in the series.
Despite not really wanting the position of fleet admiral, he was even more opposed to Sakazuki getting the position due to the latter's immense ruthlessness, and dueled his fellow admiral rather than letting him take it. After being defeated, Kuzan chose to resign from the Marines rather than stay under Akainu's command.
Having left the Marines and realizing just how truly corrupt the World Government and the Marines had become after the timeskip, it becomes clear that Kuzan seems to be only looking after his friends as illustrated by his rescue of Smoker from Doflamingo's fury on Punk Hazard.
He has a recurring phrase, "Arara", meaning "Oh, my", which is frequently used when something surprises him.

D.E. O'Malley was once Kuzan's subordinate. She is the other survivor of Ohara aside from Nico Robin, but unlike the archeologist, O'Malley joins the Marine and now is holding the rank of Vice Admiral. Kuzan saved her after the Ohara Incident. She lost both of her legs after days of floating on the sea, which rotted her limbs away. She ate the logia-class Byu-Byu no Mi, which makes her the "Wind Person".
"Oh, well. That's all about it."
His favorite drinks are Sherry wine, coffee (Kuzan's Special Blend) and milk.
Oda stated you can make a shaved ice from Kuzan, as he is the 'ice'. However, consuming that will allow him to take over you from inside.
Camel, like his traveling companion, is very lazy, making the duo compactible.
Before Camel, Kuzan used a bicycle named Ao Chari as a mode of transportation.
After his battle with Akainu, he recevied severe burn scars that spans from his right hand to the right side of his upper body. He also lost his left leg, and has been using ice prosthesis since then.
Kuzan has a cat's tongue. He doesn't like something that's too hot but if it's a warm beverage, he doesn't mind.
